Small Animal CPR: A Summary for Vet Tech Students

Depending on your prior veterinary experience, you may or may not have personal experience performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Performing CPR is obviously a tense and stressful moment for the entire veterinary team, but it can feel like a huge win when things go well.

Unfortunately, historic statistics show that less than 6% of veterinary patients survive to discharge after experiencing cardiopulmonary arrest in the hospital.

Not only is this reported survival rate low, it’s also significantly lower than the 20% survival rate reported in human medicine.1 The low CPR survival rate in veterinary patients has been attributed to a number of factors, including the lack of consensus guidelines in veterinary medicine.

With that in mind, in 2012, the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC) and the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (VECCS) collaborated to create the Reassessment Campaign on Veterinary Resuscitation (RECOVER) initiative to establish evidence-based CPR guidelines.
